Roulette Betting Options & Payouts

The betting table in roulette is laid out with two main bet types: inside bets and outside bets. These names describe where the betting positions are found on the table.

Inside bets are higher-risk bets that cover either one single number (a straight-up bet) or a small grouping of numbers. As the odds of these bets coming in are lower, the payouts are higher.

Outside bets are lower-risk bets, covering larger number groupings such as all the even numbers or all the black numbers. As the chances of these hitting are quite high, your payouts are 2:1 for column or dozen bets and even money for the rest.

The table below provides an overview of standard roulette bets and typical payouts:

Bet Type Configuration Typical Payout
Inside Bets
Straight Up Single number 35:1
Split Two adjacent numbers 17:1
Street Three numbers in a row 11:1
Corner Four numbers in a square 8:1
Line Two adjacent streets covering six numbers 5:1
Outside Bets
Column One of three vertical columns covering 12 numbers 2:1
Dozen The first, second, or third 12 numbers 2:1
Red or Black All black or all red numbers 1:1
Odd or Even All odd or all even numbers 1:1
High or Low All high (19-36) or all low (1-18) numbers 1:1

Roulette House Edge and Why it Matters

House edge is the portion of a bet that goes to the house to cover operating costs. It is written as a percentage and represents the average amount kept by the house over the course of gameplay.

Different roulette variants have different house edges, and understanding these figures will help drive your strategy. For example, American roulette, due to the addition of the double zero pocket, has a higher house edge than its European counterpart (5.26% vs 2.70%), so the European version of the game is more favourable to you as a player.

Popular Roulette Strategies

The best advice to offer regarding how to play roulette and improve your chances of winning is to go into the game with a firm understanding of the game rules and acceptance that it is a game of luck that cannot be accurately predicted except by chance. Manage your expectations and your bankroll and enjoy your game.

Some players adopt roulette betting strategies like these:

  • Martingale
  • D’Alembert
  • Fibonacci

But these cannot guarantee results, as we explain below:

Martingale Strategy

The Martingale Strategy is a progressive betting strategy where you double your bet size after every losing bet. This is a high-risk strategy, with the premise that when you eventually hit a win, you’ll recoup your losses and earn a profit equal to the value of your initial bet.

The Martingale Strategy is more commonly used on even-money bets, and while it can be effective, it relies on having a substantial bankroll, so it may not be appropriate for all players.

D’Alembert System

The D’Alembert System is more moderate, but still works on a progression basis. In this case, each time you lose, you increase your bet by one unit, and decrease it by one unit following a win. Again, the premise is that your wins and losses will eventually balance out, and you can walk away with a profit.

While D’Alembert is less aggressive than Martingale, you will still require enough of a bankroll to cover the losses. This system assumes a fairly even win-to-loss ratio, which isn’t guaranteed.

Fibonacci System

The Fibonacci System is a similar negative progression betting system that follows the famous Fibonacci sequence: each number is the sum of the previous two in the sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…).

After each loss, you move one step forward in the sequence, increasing your bet accordingly, and after each win, you move two steps back, reducing your bet. Again, this is a less aggressive strategy with the goal of slowly recovering your losses.

Common Roulette Mistakes to Avoid

The most important thing to remember is that roulette is a game of chance. As such, there is no way to influence game outcomes with outside forces or predict which numbers will hit.

The most important winning strategy is to bear this in mind and always manage your expectations. Use the limit-setting tools on our Safe Play Hub to better manage your bankroll and help you to gamble responsibly.

Avoid chasing losses with aggressive betting, and never assume that a betting strategy will produce a guaranteed positive outcome.

Yes, certain strategies are employed by roulette players to try to improve their chances of winning. However, it’s important to remember that roulette is a game of chance, and no strategy can guarantee a positive outcome.
Look for online roulette games with the lowest house edge to determine which will offer you the best returns. For example, the house edge on American roulette is 5.26% versus the 2.70% house edge of the European variant.
